MISSION CONTROL: Melik Brown
Mission Control: Metro Melik Brown on Friendship, Creativity, and Community Impact
Some of the most meaningful partnerships begin without a plan. They grow through shared experiences, mutual support, and a willingness to show up when it matters most. For Paul Schmidt of UnoDeuce Multimedia and Metro Melik Brown, that kind of connection has shaped years of creative work, community involvement, and friendship.
On this episode of Mission Control, Paul and Melik look back on the experiences that brought them together and the moments that proved their relationship was about much more than business.
Finding Common Ground in Lansing
Neither Paul nor Melik can pinpoint exactly when they first met. Maybe it was through a networking event, the Lansing Happy Hour Club, or the local roller derby community. What matters is how their overlapping interests eventually developed into a lasting partnership.
As Melik reflects, even in a community as connected as Lansing, people can spend years moving through the same spaces without ever crossing paths. When those connections finally happen, they can open doors neither person expected.
For Melik, one early opportunity to combine knowledge and creativity came through the Lansing Derby Vixens, where he became the team’s original announcer. Rather than simply calling the action, Melik committed himself to understanding the sport. He attended practices, studied the rules, learned the personalities, and figured out how to explain roller derby to people experiencing it for the first time.
His approach reflects a philosophy that carries into his other work: make complicated things accessible. Effective communication starts with understanding what an audience needs to know, then finding a way to bring them along.
A Partnership Built on Mutual Support
Paul and Melik’s relationship grew beyond individual projects. They supported each other’s ideas, shared resources, and helped create opportunities when the next step wasn’t always clear.
Paul offered workspace and equipment when Melik needed them, helping him explore professional possibilities without requiring every exchange to involve money. That spirit of generosity became an important part of their partnership. Sometimes, supporting another person’s future means offering a resource, sharing knowledge, or making room for an idea to grow.
Their collaboration also demonstrated how different strengths can come together to solve problems and create something neither person could accomplish as effectively alone.
Rising to the Challenge at the ELCA National Youth Gathering
One of their most memorable collaborations came in 2015, when UnoDeuce Multimedia worked on the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s National Youth Gathering in Detroit. The event presented significant logistical challenges, including an unexpectedly extended kickoff. What was intended to be a brief introduction stretched into hours of keeping a large crowd engaged.
Melik and DJ Brian Payne adapted in real time, using music, interaction, and improvisation to keep the energy moving. Their ability to respond to the unexpected helped address a problem before it could derail the experience. The moment highlighted an essential lesson in live production: preparation matters, but so does the ability to think creatively when plans change.
Showing Up When It Matters Most
The depth of Paul and Melik’s friendship became especially clear when Paul experienced a stroke. Melik helped get Paul to the hospital and stepped in to support UnoDeuce Multimedia’s operations while Paul recovered.
His involvement went beyond helping a friend through a difficult moment. He helped keep the business moving during a period of uncertainty, drawing on the trust and understanding they had built over years of working together.
Reflecting on their relationship, Paul expressed gratitude for the ways Melik had helped him pursue his ambitions and bring his ideas to life. Their story illustrates what genuine partnership looks like: celebrating successes, sharing opportunities, solving problems, and standing beside one another when life takes an unexpected turn.
More Than Business
As UnoDeuce Multimedia celebrates 25 years, Paul and Melik’s story offers a reminder that lasting community impact often begins with relationships. Creative collaboration can produce memorable events and meaningful projects, but the trust behind that work is what allows partnerships to endure.
On Mission Control, their conversation celebrates the people behind the projects and the value of building one another up along the way.
