WARFIGHTERS UNITED: A Conversation with Melissa Hanks Ketchel
Join us as Eric sits down with Melissa Hanks Ketchel for a conversation about loss, legacy, and the quiet strength it takes to carry a family’s story forward.
Melissa is a Gold Star Sister to Michael Hanks, who served with 3rd Battalion 1st Marines and was killed in action on November 17, 2004 during Operation Phantom Fury, widely regarded as Iraq’s bloodiest battle. In this episode, she opens up about what it really means to live as a Gold Star Family member, how that loss reshapes a family and ripples through an entire community, and the nine year fight it took to see House Bill 4189 finally signed into law by Michigan’s Governor. That bill will soon dedicate an overpass in Fowlerville, Michigan in Michael’s honor, a tribute nearly a decade in the making and one built entirely on Melissa’s persistence.
Eric and Melissa also speak candidly about the bipartisan support behind the bill, and why honoring a fallen Marine should never be a question of politics in the first place.
Melissa’s mission today reaches far beyond the legislation. She works to strengthen the bond between generations of Marines, Gold Star Families, and the active duty battalion, all in service of preserving the legacy of the Thundering Third. Her leadership is focused on building lasting systems for remembrance, mentorship, and community, including support for the brothers Michael served alongside, many of whom still carry survivor’s guilt all these years later.
Out of that grief, Melissa founded the Michael Wayne Hanks Foundation, a living tribute to her brother and a resource for the families and Marines who carry his memory forward every day.

This is a story about what happens when love refuses to let go, and how one family turned unimaginable loss into a legacy that will outlive them all. Thank you, Melissa, for trusting us with Michael’s story.
