Highfields: Building Stronger Communities Through Chosen Family
It takes a village to help children and families thrive. At Highfields, that belief is more than a familiar saying. It is the foundation of an approach built around support, opportunity and the idea that everyone deserves a chance to build a better future.
Highfields works with children and families facing a variety of challenges, helping them develop the skills, resources and confidence to move forward. Through educational opportunities, residential care and family support services, the organization creates pathways for people to grow and make positive changes in their lives.
At the heart of that work is a simple goal: helping every child and family become the best version of themselves, regardless of where their journey begins.
Creating Opportunities for Young People
Highfields operates 10 out-of-school programs across three counties, offering opportunities for young people to find support beyond the traditional classroom.
One example is Ingham Academy, a program Highfields helped establish more than 15 years ago. The Academy serves students who face challenges in traditional school settings, including some with involvement in the justice system. Through additional guidance and support, students have an opportunity to work toward high school graduation and a more positive path forward.
As Highfields demonstrates, a young person’s circumstances do not have to define their future. The organization’s work is grounded in the belief that providing the right support can help children and families recognize their potential and discover opportunities they may not have thought possible.
Supporting Young People Through Change
Highfields’ Residential Program is one of its longest-running initiatives. It serves youth who are required to participate through court orders and who may be navigating difficult circumstances, including poverty and substance abuse. The program focuses on helping young people develop the knowledge, emotional awareness and coping skills they need to make healthier choices.
Braydin’s experience illustrates what that support can look like. Initially shy and reserved, he began developing the confidence to express himself and better understand his emotions. Through personalized support and nature-based activities, he learned to identify anger triggers and develop coping strategies.
His progress reflects an important part of Highfields’ approach: growth takes time, and giving young people the tools to navigate challenges can help them move toward a stronger future.
Helping Families Move Forward Together
Supporting children also means supporting the families around them. Highfields’ Families Together Building Solutions program works to preserve family unity by reducing barriers, strengthening safety and helping parents develop practical skills.
Kelsi’s story demonstrates the importance of that work. After reuniting with her children, she received support with budgeting, time management and connections to community resources. Those tools helped her regain stability and begin working toward her own educational goals. Her experience reflects the commitment at the center of Highfields’ programs: when families have access to meaningful support and are willing to put in the work, positive change becomes possible.
As one reflection on the program puts it, “If you put in the work, they’ll match it and good things will happen.”
The Power of Chosen Family
Highfields’ impact extends beyond the people directly enrolled in its programs. It also depends on a wider network of donors, board members, volunteers, staff and community partners.
Highfields describes this network through the idea of Chosen Family: people brought together by a shared commitment to helping children and families succeed. Each person has a role to play. Some contribute time and expertise, while others provide financial support, guidance or connections that help the organization continue its work.
Together, those individual contributions can create a much larger impact.
As one supporter explains, “My little sliver of contribution will cause great ripples for better communities in Michigan.”
That is the power of community. When people come together around a shared purpose, even a small contribution can become part of something much bigger.
Building a Stronger Future
Highfields shows what can happen when children and families are met with opportunity, encouragement and support. Whether helping a student find a path toward graduation, giving a young person tools to manage difficult emotions or helping a family rebuild stability, the organization works to create possibilities for a better future.
And it does not do that work alone.
Through its Chosen Family, Highfields brings people together around the belief that stronger families help build stronger communities. For anyone looking to make a difference, volunteering, donating or sharing the organization’s mission can be a meaningful place to start.
Because helping a community thrive begins with making sure its children and families know they do not have to face life’s challenges alone.
